As a community manager, where it's fascinating for me is to see when community members start to relate to a platform almost in a child/parent dynamic. I'm fascinated by situations where folks seem to treat their platform almost as a rich parent, with users acting as children who feel entitled to receive attention, an allowance, validation, etc. I feel like this dynamic is often in play when folks get into conversations about fairness, and I have a lot of compassion for it... but also think it often points to users who are feeling disempowered, and have forgotten that they get to make choices about what they want to do.

Ultimately, I always try to remind all my fellow writers that they have agency. Their loyalty must always be to their writing, not to any platform. (Including Medium!) We all have the sovereignty to make choices about what feels like a good fit for our work. My goal is always just to make sure that folks have the information they need to make educated decisions about what works for them.
