My best book readings were the ones I organized at bars in cities where I had lots of friends. I'd use the book reading as a chance to have a meetup, friends would bring friends, good times were had and maybe I'd sell a couple books at the end.
The worst were the ones my publisher organized. I had a press day in Vancouver BC that I was soooo excited about... that day, I had two radio interviews, and even a TV appearance on a local news show! I felt so fancy and important!
That night, three people came to the reading. Two of them bought books. The bookstore had ordered 60 copies of my book and I signed every single one. For years, you could find autographed copies of my books on Amazon, and they were all from that one bookstore.
Deeply humbling.
(And keep in mind, this book is now in its third edition! It's not like it was a failure! It's just that very few people go to readings for non celebrity authors. It's ok! It's just important for authors to understand the realities.💜)
